In this ongoing series, we ask executives, entrepreneurs and business leaders about mistakes that have shaped their business philosophy.

Background:

Santy Integrated is an advertising and digital agency based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Founded in 1992, Santy has provided services for major brands, including Peter Piper Pizza, Delta Air Lines, Pocky, Bona, Salad and Go, and Flywheel.

The Mistake:

My company is 26 years old and the critical mistake that I made during its formation was not having women in lead, operational and director roles.

I’ve discovered that having women in critical, senior roles makes a monumental difference to the success of the company.

We have a lot of ladies in the communications industry, and without [them] having role models to emulate, to look up to and to have as confidantes, that led to a lot of turnover with women over the years.

I’ve discovered that having women in critical, senior roles makes a monumental difference to the success of the company.

The Lesson:

Now that I have more women in senior roles, we’re seeing far less turnover and I can see the growth of these ladies happening right in front of me. That’s been critical because turnover is so hard on a professional services organization.

Clients get used to somebody, and they like the way that person serves them. When they leave, it only hurts the company’s relationship with that client. Turnover is always something to which we pay close attention.

I know going forward that I want even more women in leadership roles in the company as we continue to grow.

I believe that, in the long run, it potentially saves me money. I think it makes the operation stronger and ensures our success.
